Brian Madigan was born on December 14, 1949, in New York City, New York, United States. He is the son of Jack Peter and Helene Mann Madigan.
Brian Madigan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English history at Rutgers University-New Brunswick in 1971 and a Master of Arts degree in art history in 1975. He also received a Master of Arts degree at the University of New Brunswick, Canada, in English literature in 1973. He got a Doctor of Philosophy degree in art history from the University of Minnesota in 1982.
Brian Madigan became a lecturer at Santa Clara University in 1982 and worked there till 1983. From 1984 to 1986 he held the position of a visiting assistant professor of art history at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Then he worked as a visiting assistant professor at Saint Mary's College in Indiana till 1997. Since 1988 Madigan is an associate professor at Wayne State University. His research interests include Greek sculpture, Roman sculpture, the afterlife of Classicism and the history of archaeology. In 1995-1996 he served as a consultant at Prentice Hall.
Madigan is also known as an author. His first work was the book The Temple of Apollo Bassitas: The sculpture (1992) co-written with a professor of the University of Minnesota Fred Cooper. In 1993 he contributed an essay "A Statue in the Temple of Apollo at Bassai" to the book Sculpture from Arcadia and Laconia. In the book Corinthian and Attic Vases in the Detroit Institute of Arts (2007), Madigan describes the physical and painted characteristics of each vase from Corinth and Athens. He discusses the relationship of the painted decoration to other Greek painted vases, religious or social institutions.
The Ceremonial Sculptures of the Roman Gods (2012) addresses their performative qualities: where and how they appeared, who was responsible for handling them, with what conventions of decorum, and with what response from the audience. Madigan is the contributor to various Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Studies.
