Bunya Okamoto attended Waseda University and later served as reporter of Bunsho Club magazine.
Bunya Okamoto received instruction in Shin-nai music from his mother, Tsuruga Wakakichi, and assumed the professional name of Fujimatsu Kagaji-dayu which he later changed to Bunya Okamoto. Besides producing many old style Shin-nai tunes he also wrote such new style ones as Haritsuke Mozaemon (Mozaemon-name of a man on the Cross), Inado Shinju (Lovers' Suicide at Imado) and Tojuro-no Koi (Tojftro's Love). He published the monthly periodical, Shin-nai Tsushin (Shin-nai Music News).
