About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns was born on October 3, 1835 in Paris. He was the only child of Jacques-Joseph-Victor Saint-Saëns and Françoise-Clémence.
Saint-Saëns began his musical education by studying piano with his grandaunt.
He studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatory under Jacques Fromentin Halévy.
In 1849 and 1851 he won prizes in organ. His dexterity at this instrument, coupled with his ability to improvise, led in 1853 to his appointment as an organist at the church of St-Merry and 5 years later at the famed Church of the Madeleine in Paris.
From 1861 to 1865 he taught piano at the École Niedermeyer School.
An overture entitled "Spartacus, " which has remained unpublished, was crowned at a competition instituted in 1863 by the Societe Sainte Cecile of Bordeaux.
After the tragic events of 1870, when Saint-Saëns did his duty as a patriot by serving in the National Guard, the opportunity at last offered itself: a one-act opera from his pen “La princesse jaune” with words by Louis Gallet, was produced at the Opéra Comique with moderate success on June 12, 1872.
In 1871 Saint-Saëns helped found the National Society of Music, an organization devoted to the encouragement of young French composers, but he withdrew 5 years later as his essentially conservative nature had come into conflict with the changing interests of the younger composers.
He resigned from his position at the Madeleine in 1877 and spent the following years touring North and South America, England, Russia and Austria, conducting and performing his own compositions.
He was outspoken against the music of Claude Debussy and the French impressionist school. His only operatic success “Samson et Dalila” (1877), contains the well-known aria “My heart at thy sweet voice” and a colorful bacchanale. Rejected in Paris because of the prejudice against portraying biblical characters on the stage, it was given in German at Weimar in 1877. In 1890 Samson et Dalila was finally staged in Paris at the Théâtre Eden and later became his most popular opera.
In addition to his activities as composer and performer, Saint-Saëns was also the general editor of the complete works of Jean Philippe Rameau.
The compositions of Saint-Saëns include five Piano Concertos, of which the Second (1868) and the Fourth (1875) hold a secure place in the repertoire today.
His "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for violin and orchestra" (1870) is better known than his other concertos.
Another composition that reveals his sense of humor is "The Carnival of Animals" (1866); the lovely cello solo "The Swan" comes from this work.
More impressive than these occasional compositions is the "Third Symphony" (1886), the orchestration of which includes an organ as well as piano.
