Background

Pierce, Byron Root was born on September 20, 1829 in E. Bloomfield, New York, United States. Son of Silas and Mary (Root) Pierce.

Education

Academic education Rochester, New York. Began business life in his father’s woolen factory. Later became dentist, removed to Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1856.

Also had branch office at Joliet, Illinois.

Career

Entered Union Army as captain Company K, 3d Michigan Regiment, May 13, 1861. Rapidly promoted for bravery and meritorious conduct. Major 3d Michigan Infantry, October 21, 1861.

Lieutenant colonel, July 25, 1862. Colonel, January 1, 1863. Brigadier general vols., June 7, 1864.

Bvtd. major general, April 5, 1865, “for gallant service at battle of Sailor’s Creek.” Commandant Michigan Soldiers’ Home from its opening, 1887, until 1891. Employed in Physician organization Department Home: Grand Rapids, Mich.
