Educated at the Dakar High School and later at the Champollion High School and the Faculty of Law in Grenoble, where he took an LLB degree.
Elected Territorial Councillor in 1959 he became a Deputy and First Vice President of the National Assembly. From 1959 to 1961 he was also a Senator of the French Community.
Recalled to Abidjan in 1963, he became on February 15 Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs, taking over 184 the portfolio from President Houphouet Boigny who was then busy putting his political house in order, after the discovery of two plots against his government. Later he left the Foreign Affairs Ministry to become Minister of Justice and Guardian of the Seals.
Sent in May 1961 to Paris as Ambassador to France and Permanent Representative at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), he is still remembered as one of the most polished African diplomats.
