Candelas Newton

Background

Candelas Newton was born on November 13, 1948 in Santander, Idem, Spain, in the family of José Sanchez and Isabel Gala. She came to the United States in 1973, and bacame a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Education

Candelas received Bachelor of Arts in modern philology at University Salamanca, Spain, in 1972. Then she got Master of Arts at University Pittsburgh, in 1976, and Doctor of Philosophy at University Pittsburgh in 1980.

Career

Candelas worked as a lecturer at St. Ursula's Grammar School, London, in 1972-1973, then a lecturer at Carlow College, Pittsburgh, in 1973-1974. She served as a teaching assistant and fellow at University of Pittsburgh in 1975-1978, an instructor at Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, North Carolina, in 1978-1981, also an assistant professor at Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, North Carolina, in 1981-1985, an associate professor at Wake Forest Univarsity, Winston Salem, North Carolina, in 1985-1991, and full professor of Spanish at Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, North Carolina, since 1991.

Candelas also served as a director of Wake Forest Univarsity Exchange Scholarship Programs with Spain and Colombia, since 1986, coordinator of Wake Forest Univesity Salamanca Program, since 1986, and consultant at Letras Peninsulares, East Lansing, Michigan, since 1990.

Achievements

• Candelas is famous for her books "Lorca: Libro de poemas o las aventuras de una busqueda", "Lorca: Una escritura en trance; Libro de poemas y Divan del Tamarit", and "Understanding Federico Garcia Lorca."
