Samuel Templeman Gladding is an American educator and author. He is a professor and chair of the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Gladding has authored numerous professional publications, including 36 books.

Background

Samuel Gladding was born on October 5, 1945, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He is the son of Russell Burton and Gertrude (Templeman) Gladding.

Education

Samuel holds a Bachelor of Arts (1967) from Wake Forest University, a Master of Arts (1970) from Yale University. In 1977 he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Career

Samuel Gladding began his career as a psychologist at Rockingham County Mental Health Center, Wentworth, North Carolina from 1971 to 1976. He then held a position as an instructor of psychology at Rockingham Community College, Wentworth from 1976 to 1981.

In 1981 Samuel was an assistant professor at Fairfield University and from 1984 to 1990 he served as an associate professor at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

He joined the Wake Forest faculty in 1990 as an assistant to then-President Thomas K. Hearn Jr. and later served as the University's associate provost before being named chair of the new counseling department in 1996. Since then, he has taught undergraduate classes on the Creative Arts and Counseling and graduate courses on family counseling.

Samuel's books including The Counseling Dictionary (2001), Becoming a Counselor: The Light, the Bright, and the Serious(2002), Family Therapy: History, Theory, & Process (2002), Group Work: A Counseling Specialty (2003), Counseling: A Comprehensive Profession (2004), Counseling Theories: Essential Concepts and Applications (2005), Counseling as an Art: The Creative Arts in Counseling (2005).

He is the former editor of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work.

Achievements

  • Samuel Gladding is a prolific writer and an exceptional speaker. He was presented with the IAMFC Research Award. In 1999, he was cited as being in the top 1% of contributors to the Journal of Counseling and Development. He has been listed as a noteworthy Academic administrator by Marquis Who's Who.
