Carl Ernest Bricken, American composer. Awarded Pulitzer prize, 1929; Guggenheim fellowship, 1930-1931. Member American Association University Professors, American Musicological Society, American Composers Alliance.; Rotarian.


Bricken, Carl Ernest was born on December 28, 1898 in Shelbyville, Kentucky, United States. Son of Bird E. and Lillie M. (Martin) Bricken.


Bachelor of Arts, Yale University, 1922. Studied composition under Scalero and piano under Leopold and Bert, David Mannes School. Studied under Cortot (Paris) and Weisse (Vienna).


C. Alexander. Teacher of piano, David Mannes School, 1925-1929. Teacher theory Institute of Museum Art, 1929-1930. Chairman music department University of Chicago, 1931-1938.

Director School Music, University of Wisconsin, 1938-1944. Mus. director and conductor Seattle Symphony, 1944-1948. Professor theory and composer in residence Sweet Briar College, also department chairman music, now professor emeritus.
