He graduated from the Milan Conservatory in 1900.
His first opera, Giovanni Gallurese, was produced in Turin in 1905. He established his reputation as a leading operatic composer with L'Amore dei tre re ("The Love of Three Kings"), produced at La Scala Opera House in Milan in 1913 and at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York the following year. His other operas include Hellera (1909), La Nave (1918), La Notte di Zoraima (1931), and L'incantesimo ("The Enchantment") (1943). Montemezzi also wrote two symphonic poems and a cantata.
