Brinken, Carl Ernest was born on December 28, 1898 in Shelbyville, Kentucky, United States. Son of Bird E. and Lillie M. (Martin) Brinken.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Yale University, 1922. Studied composition under Scalero and piano under Leopold and Bert, David Mannes School. Studied under Cortot (Paris) and Weisse (Vienna).

Career

Teacher of piano, David Mannes School, 1925-1929. Teacher theory, Institute of Musical Art, 1929-1930. Chairman music Department, University of Chicago, 1931-1938.

Director School of Music, University of Wisconsin, 1938-1944. Musical director and conductor Seattle Symphony, 1944-1948. Professor theory and composer in residence Sweet Briar College, also department chairman music, later professor emeritus.
