Dr. Denbow was primarily during his long distinguished career as a teacher of mathematics. He especially liked to teach those students, who like himself, had come from a rural Ohio background. He served twice as the chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Ohio University. The second time he laid the groundwork for the development of the Ph.D. program. His last official act as department chair was the hiring of Robert G. Helsel, who had been the chairman at Ohio State University, as the first permanent chair of the department. This was a requirement at the time of the accreditation bodies for approval of the Ph.D. program.
