Shaw studied poetry with Sidney Cox at Cummington School of the Arts in 1933 and 1936-1937.
To support himself, Carleton Shaw worked as a shipfitter, truck driver, farmhand, school custodian, etc., and served in the Massachusetts State Guard from 1941 to 1944. He began publishing poetry in the 1930s in such notable publications as Poetry, and also composed church music. He attended the Bread Loaf Writers Conference in 1965 and his first book of poems, Desperado came out the same year. It was followed by two verse collections, Volcano House: 33 Poems and November Is a Woman.
