Carlo Ponti

Background

Carlo Ponti was born in 1823 in Ticino, Switzerland.

Career

A specialist in architectural photography, especially of the Piazza San Marco, Carlo Ponti was one of the few Italians who succeeded in competing with foreigners. He was optician to King Victor Emanuel II of Italy.

Achievements

• Carlo Ponti invented and constructed a device called the megalethoscope, which gained him the Grand Prize at the London Exposition of 1862.
