Carmen Bredeson was born on November 3, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia, United States to the family of Ralph Thibodeau and Betty Trader. Her father worked as a professor and music critic.
In 1967 Carmen Bredeson graduated from Texas A & M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education in English and Journalism. Later she decided to continue her education and in 1981 she became a Master of Science in Instructional Technology and Library work at Southern Illinois University.
Bredeson’s first occupation after graduation was as a high school English teacher. In 1972 she became a full-time mother. While raising her two children, Bredeson volunteered at local schools and libraries. Since her own town did not have a public library, Bredeson and members of the community spent a lot of time and energy lobbying county officials to build one. Although it took ten years, their efforts were successful.
In 1990, around the time the library was built and her children were entering college, Bredeson decided to write. She explained, “Since I love to do research, nonfiction was perfect for me. I wrote a short biography and spent the next two years sending it to publishers. I collected a big stack of rejection notices before finally getting the attention of an editor.” Bredeson’s first work, Jonas Salk: Discoverer of the Polio Vaccine, was published in 1993. She has written more than eighty books for young people since then.

Quotations:
“I grew up in a house filled with books. They lined the shelves, covered the tables, and piled up on the floor. Members of my family often traded books across the hallway at night and read favorite passages aloud for anyone who would listen.”
“I always enjoyed writing research papers. Most of my classmates complained about the assignments, but I loved being in the library, digging through books for information. Making notes and arranging the facts into logical order appealed to me. These skills served me well in graduate school while I was studying to become a school librarian. I especially enjoyed the many reference assignments we were given. Although I never worked as a librarian, the things I learned didn’t go to waste.”
“Writing nonfiction has been grand!” Bredeson com-mented. “I have learned so much in the process and enjoy the challenge of each new topic. Hopefully I can transfer some of my enthusiasm for reading and learning to the students who check out my books. Someone asked me one day how I happened to start writing. I answered that I had unknowingly been preparing for it my whole life.”
Bredeson developed a love of books as a child in Virginia.
Carmen nee Thibodeau married an engineer Larry Dean Bredeson on December 27, 1969. They have two children: Dean and Lindsey.
