Carney E. S. Gavin received a Bachelor of Arts in Classics from Boston College in 1959. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Jesus College, Oxford University, from 1959 to 1961 and received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree from the University of Innsbruck in 1963, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations in 1973 at Harvard University.
Since 1975 Carney Gavin has been curator of the Harvard Semitic Museum. He was their assistant curator from 1973 to 1975. He has been assistant to the president of the American Schools of Oriental Research since 1973, director of the Goethe Society of New England since 1978.
He was also the creator of a television film using early Middle Eastern documentary photographs, entitled Petra, ferash, and Damascus, in 1978. Carney Gavin is involved with historical investigations, interdisciplinary research. He is also the director of photohistorical exhibitions and film projects.
