Carol Sabbeth was born on March 26, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; the daughter of Dave Landstrom, a sheet metal worker, and Eileen Landstrom, a homemaker.
In 1978 Carol Sabbeth received a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Illinois University.
Carol Sabbeth wrote her first book almost by accident. In 1992 she began teaching classes in the Portland area, classes which featured her idea of using the computer to design crafts projects. Carol taught classes both in the public schools (for teachers) and through a children’s after-school enrichment program. For these classes, she designed a collection of arts and crafts projects, all created on the computer. Sabbeth found that students enjoyed combining their computer skills with their creativity. The projects got kids thinking about the computer in a new way. It wasn’t just something for typing or playing computer games.
Carol was so pleased with the results in class that decided to publish a book including the projects, along with interesting information about the personal computer. That enabled her to reach many more children and teachers than she could in the classes. Sabbeth's first book, Kids’ Computer Creations, was a hit with technology and art teachers, as well as parents and children.
Later, Carol and her husband wrote a book about science and music together, drawing on Alex's background as a professional musician. It’s called Rubber Band Banjos.
Sabbeth also developed a Web site, Crayons and Computers, that includes art lessons and fun ways to use a computer as an art tool. Many schools and libraries are linked to this site and use it in their classrooms.
Her published credits also include Van Gogh and the Post-Impressionists for Kids, Monet and the Impressionists for Kids and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
