Carol Vitz received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mills College in Oakland, California, in 1963 and did graduate work at the Department of International Relations at Claremont Graduate School, California, in 1964. From 1967 to 1968 she studied at the Mannes Conservatory of Music in New York City. She began her study of photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (also known as Rietveld School of Art & Design and Rietveld Academy), Amsterdam (1970-1972).
Carol Vitz worked as a filmstrip producer from 1978 to 1979 at Montage Audio Visuals in Los Angeles, having freelanced from 1975 to 1979.
Carol Vitz is a member of the Friends of Photography and the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies.
In 1975 Carol Vitz studied with Robert Heinecken in a master's course in photography at University of California at Los Angeles.
