(A Guide to Jewish Knowledge by Rabbi Chaim Pearl and Dr R...)
A Guide to Jewish Knowledge by Rabbi Chaim Pearl and Dr Reuben Brookes, deals with a comprehensive list of subjects in a brief overview of the Jewish Religion. The first part of the book "Jewish Religious Observances" outlines the Jewish Calendar, gives an overview of the Jewish Sabbath, and tells us about the Jewish Holidays and Festivals. This is followed by a section entitled General which deals with the Special Sabbaths, the Minor Fasts, Kashrut and the Dietary Laws, and a Classified Terminology of of the more commonly used Hebrew words in Jewish religious liturgy. The third part of the book is about the Basic Sources of Jewish Life and Thought, including the Bible and it's contents, the Prayer Book, the Talmud, the Midrash and Mediaeval Scholars and Writers from Rashi to the Shulchan Aruch. Then the reader is introduced to the Hebrew alphabet and the fifth section is a bird's eye view of Jewish history from Abraham to the re-foundation of the third independent Jewish State in the Land of Israel, in 1948. The last part deals with the basic beliefs and philosophy of Judaism, and is a fascinating introduction to Jewish Thought. An excellent guide for Jews who want an introduction to their religion, or gentiles who want to know about Judaism. Review by Gary Selikow.

(It was in medieval Spain that Jewish religious philosophy...)
It was in medieval Spain that Jewish religious philosophy reached its highest expression, largely because because of the historical and cultural conditions of the period which forced the Jews to present a systematic philosophy that could stand firm against the claims of non-religious rationalist and the temporal strength of other religions. The result is seen in the rich legacy of religio-philosophical literature left by men whose teaching remained central to Jewish theology until at least the advent of the modern scientific era.
