A specialist in geology as applied to engineering, Berkey was employed by the state geological surveys of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York. He was also consulting geologist of the water supply departments of New York, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles, consulting engineer for the United States Reclamation Bureau of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and geologist for the Port of New York Authority.
He was executive secretary and president of the Geological Society of America. He was frequently consulted by mining and engineering concerns, and his publications include works on the geology of Mongolia, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Mississippi Valley, Puerto Rico, and the Gobi Desert.
