(PREFACE. TfiE inaugural address on the Authority of Holy...)
PREFACE. TfiE inaugural address on the Authority of Holy Scripture, delivered Jan. 20, 1891, in the Adams chapel of the Union Theological Seminary, New York, was printed by authority of the directors of the Seminary, in accordance with their custom, for the use of the directors, faculty, students, and friends of the institution. The address has attracted the attention of the public far beyond anything that could have been anticipated. The discussions about it have not only developed the usual hostility of the reactionary anti-revision party in the Presbyterian Church and of the ultra-conservative factions in other denominations; but have also made it evident that some of my friends do not altogether understand my position with regard to certain diflficult and delicate questions of our times. I.have seen nothing in the hostile criticism to lead me to make any changes whatever, either in the matter or the form of th.e address. But it seems to me wise to respond to the wishes of some of my friends and republish the address under my own responsibility, with some additional notes and explanations. C. A. Briggs. May 4, 1891. -- THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE EDWARD ROBINSON CHAIR OF BIBLICAL THEOLOGY At the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Union Theological Seminary in the city of New York, held November ii, 1890, the following preamble and resolution were adopted by a unanimous vote: Whereas, The Honorable Charles Butler, LL.D., President of the Board of Directors of this Seminary, has made provision for a permanent fund for the purpose of establishing and endowing a Chair in this Seminary, to be called the Edward Robinson Chair of Biblical Theology; Now THEREFORE, Resolved, That a new professorship shall be and is hereby created, which shall be called the " Edward Robinson Chair of Biblical Theology"; that the income of the endowment of one hundred thousand dollars given to this Seminary by the said Chcirles Butler in the manner mentioned in his bond, dated April 25, 1890, shall be applied solely to the support of said Chair, according to the provisions of said bond. The President of the Faculty suggested that the Board, in courtesy, should ask Dr. Butler to express to us freely his wishes with reference to the action just taken. Thereupon President Butler addressed the Board of Directors as follows: "The formal establishment by the Board of 'The Edward Robinson Chair of Biblical Theology' fulfils the object desired in the provision which I have made for its endowment. T beg to express my satisfaction and gratitude for this action. It is in accord with the views of the distinguished Christian scholar in whose memory the Chair is founded. In a letter to the Board, dated January 20, 1837, accepting the Professorship of Sacred Literature, he said: 'The Constitution properly requires every Professor to declare that he believer the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice. This is placing the Bible in its true position as the only foundation of Christian theology. It follows as a necessary consequence that the study of the Bible, as taught in the department of Biblical Literature, must be the foundation of all right theological education.' This new Chair of Biblical Theology seems to me to realize the sentiment embodied in this quotation, in a form which, if he were now present with us, would receive his benediction. It embalms his memory indissolubly with the life of this Seminary, and will ever be an inspiration to its students in their * search of the Scriptures.' " In regard to the incumbent of this Chair, I avail of the courtesy of the Board to express my wish that it may be one'who sat as a pupil at the feet of that eminent feacher, and I regard it as a felicity to the Seminary that there is one here who has been trained within its walls, and who, by his ripe scholarship and purity of character in Christian faith and practice, has won the

(Excerpt from Messianic Prophecy: The Prediction of the Fu...)
Excerpt from Messianic Prophecy: The Prediction of the Fulfillment of Redemption Through the Messiah The present volume traces the Messianic idea in its development in the Old Testament Scriptures. It does not enter into the Messianic idea of the apocryphal books, or of the Apocalypses, or of the Jewish sects of the four centuries, in the midst of which the first advent occurred, because the Messianic idea of the Old Testament is complete in the canon of the Old Testament. The Messianic ideas of the later Jews have their proper place as an external historical frame in which to set the Messianic idea of Christ and His apostles. (This is a reprint of the classic work of Charles Augustus...)
This is a reprint of the classic work of Charles Augustus Briggs' "Whither?: A Theological Question for the Times". Charles Augustus Briggs (January 15, 1841 – June 8, 1913), American Presbyterian (and later Episcopalian) scholar and theologian, was born in New York City, the son of Alanson Briggs and Sarah Mead Berrian. He was excommunicated from the Presbyterian Church because of his liberal theology regarding the Bible.

Charles Augustus Briggs was born on January 15, 1841 in New York City, the son of Alanson and Sarah Mead (Berrian) Briggs. His father was a business man and the son grew up in easy circumstances.
Charles Briggs took his college course at the University of Virginia. At the outbreak of the Civil War he served for a few months with the 7th Regiment of New York. He then entered Union Theological Seminary where he remained for two years.
After a brief period in business, in 1865 he went abroad for four years of theological study in Berlin.
After returning to America from Berlin in 1870, Briggs became pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Roselle, New Jersey, and in 1874 professor of Hebrew and the cognate languages in Union Theological Seminary. Here he at once made himself felt and under his influence the Seminary became a notable center of Old Testament study.
In 1890 a professorship of Biblical theology was founded in memory of Edward Robinson and Briggs became the first incumbent of the new chair. From its foundation Union Seminary, though Presbyterian in its affiliations, had been independent of all ecclesiastical control, but in 1870 at the time of the reunion of the old and new school wings of the Presbyterian Church the General Assembly of the reunited church in an access of good feeling had been given by the Seminary the right to veto appointments to its faculty.
At his induction into the new professorship Dr. Briggs, already widely suspect on account of his work in Old Testament criticism, gave an address on the authority of Holy Scripture which deeply offended many conservatives. The result was the veto of his appointment by the General Assembly and his trial for heresy by the Presbytery of New York in 1892.
The presbytery acquitted him but the prosecution appealed to the General Assembly which condemned him and suspended him from the ministry. After waiting for some years he took orders in the Episcopal Church and remained a clergyman of that church until his death. In the meantime the Seminary's board of directors declining to recognize the right of the General Assembly to veto the transfer of a professor from one chair to another within the faculty, retained Briggs in his professorship and severed relations with the Assembly. The Seminary thus became again wholly independent and a few years later completely undenominational.
His trial for heresy was the most dramatic event of Briggs's career. It seemed to many a futile affair, having to do only with the question whether he was sound in the faith according to the Westminster standards, but the issue was really much broader, and though the decision went against him the trial proved a liberating influence for multitudes and marked an epoch in the history of American Presbyterianism.
To the end of his life he was an untiring worker. A bibliography of his books and articles published two years before his death contains nearly two hundred titles. Most important of the former is probably his Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Psalms published in 1906-07 in two volumes.
Among the greatest of his services to the cause of Biblical and theological learning are two series--the International Critical Commentary and the International Theological Library--which he planned and edited and in which he had the cooperation of leading scholars.
He died in his rooms at Union Theological Seminary on 8 June 1913 of pneumonia at the age of seventy-two, after nearly forty years of service as a professor.

(PREFACE. TfiE inaugural address on the Authority of Holy...)
Charles Briggs had long been deeply interested in church unity, writing frequently upon the subject and discussing it with dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church as well as of other churches, for he envisaged the reunion of all Christendom, not merely of Protestantism.
He was eventually accused of teaching heresy and suspended from the Presbyterian ministry by the General Assembly. Union Seminary severed relations with the General Assembly, and Briggs joined the Episcopal Church. He was ordained deacon on May 27, 1898, and priest on May 24, 1899.
As an Episcopalian Briggs remained controversial, although not in exactly the same ways he had been as a Presbyterian. His attention was shifting to the cause of ecumenism, or worldwide Christian unity and cooperation.
In spite of his reputation for radicalism Briggs was thoroughly conservative except in the field of Biblical criticism. His faith in the historic doctrines of the church was profound and unwavering. In his later years, as often happens, he even became suspicious of his younger colleagues who departed further from the traditional faith than he had done.
He was particularly sensitive in these years concerning the person of Christ and the Virgin Birth. In matters of Biblical criticism, however, he maintained his early attitude. The eagerness and energy of his mind were shown when in 1904 at the age of sixty-three he resigned the chair of Biblical theology and turned to the teaching of symbolics and irenics. During his later life his studies were carried on largely with this end in view and his teaching followed similar lines.
Quotations: “The absolute standard of human orthodoxy is the sum of the total truth revealed by God—a sum which continued to grow and unfold in history, ” he argued. “Any man or church that refuses to accept the discoveries of science or the truths of philosophy or the facts of history or the new light that breaks forth from the Word of God to the devout student on the pretense that it conflicts with his orthodoxy or the orthodox standards of his church, prefers the traditions of man to the truth. ”
Briggs held positive opinions and his emphatic enunciation of them made him many enemies, but he had a deeply affectionate nature and was loved as well as admired by a large circle of devoted friends.
He was also a rapid worker, of highly nervous temperament, often impatient of the slower mental processes of others. Briggs had an extraordinarily fertile mind, teeming with ideas on all sorts of subjects.
In 1865 Charles Augustus Briggs married Julia Valentine Dobbs of New York.
