(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Charles Astor Bristed (1820-1874) was the favourite grandson of John Jacob Astor II, of Waldorf-Astoria fame. After gaining a degree at Yale, Bristed entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1840, graduating in 1845. Five Years in an English University, first published in 1852 by Putnam in New York, is a richly detailed account of student life in the Cambridge of the 1840s. The central rationale for the book, which is as appealing today as it was then, is that this is pre-eminently a book about an American student at an English university. The book belongs to a fascinating 19th century trans-Atlantic publishing genre: travel accounts designed to describe British culture to Americans and vice-versa. In this new edition, some substantial additions have been made: the Foreword and Introduction both help to contextualise the work, and point to its significance as an important historical source and as a fascinating memoir of life in Victorian Cambridge; annotation helps to identify the individuals who appear in Bristed’s text; and an index allows full use to be made of the text for the first time.

(Charles Astor Bristed (1820-1874) was an American scholar...)
Charles Astor Bristed (1820-1874) was an American scholar and author, and the first American writer to defend American English spelling. Having graduated from Trinity College in 1845 he published this account of his experiences at the university in 1852 to provide accurate, first-hand information for Americans about study in an English university, with the intention of starting a debate over the inclusion of aspects of English higher education in the American system. Volume 1 contains his recollections of his time in Cambridge as an undergraduate, with detailed descriptions of daily life, examinations, lectures and activities outside academia. Written for those with no experience of the university, this volume provides a valuable insight into the daily life of a student at Cambridge in the middle of the nineteenth century while also providing explanations for the aspects of the institution which to the outsider might seem strange.

Charles Astor Bristed was born on October 6, 1820 in New York City and was a son of Rev. John Bristed, and Magdalen, daughter of John Jacob Astor II.
Charles Bristed was prepared for college by tutors, and entered Yale College at the age of fifteen. When he was graduated, in 1839, after having gained three of the four classical prizes, he was influenced by relatives to remain at Yale for a year of graduate work; but he later expressed the opinion that the time was almost wasted, as a New England college town was a good place "to unmake a partially formed scholar. "
In 1840 he matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, where he was graduated in 1845 as a foundation scholar. Charles Bristed writes of himself in this period as being dressed "in the last Gothamite fashion" and proud of introducing sherry cobbler at Trinity College dinner parties, though shunning all student excesses. He won the University Latin Essay Prize and on receiving his B. A. degree evaded taking the oaths of allegiance to Church and State then required.
After some European travel, Bristed returned to the United States and began writing for his own pleasure, sometimes under the name of Carl Benson. Under this pseudonym he was for some years a regular contributor to the sporting journals, Porter's Spirit of the Times and Wilkes's Spirit of the Times.
Bristed died in Washington, D. C. on January 14, 1874. His funeral was held in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
Charles Bristed's chief works are: Selections from Catullus, for School Use (1849); A Letter to the Hon. Horace Mann (1850), a reply to some criticisms of Astor and Girard; The Upper Ten Thousand: Sketches of American Society (1852), sketches of New York society; Five Years in an English University (1852); "The English Language in America" (in Cambridge Essays, 1855); Pieces of a Broken-Down Critic (1858); Now Is the Time to Settle It (1862); No Surrender (1863); The Cowards' Convention (1864); The Interference Theory of Government (1867), against tariff and liquor prohibition; Anacreontics (1872); and On Some Exaggerations in Comparative Philology (1873). He also served as a member of the American Philological Association and a contributor at its meetings, and was a trustee of the Astor Library from its foundation until his death.

As a writer Charles Bristed showed a trained mind and fastidious taste, but considerable self-consciousness. His desire for accuracy caused too great detail and timidity in drawing conclusions from facts. Devotion to classical scholarship is evident in his literary criticisms and translations. He was a frequent contributor to the Galaxy under the pen-name "Carl Benson".
Charles Bristed was a member of the American Philological Association.
On January 14, 1847, Bristed married Laura Brevoort of New York, who died in 1860. In 1867 he married Grace Sedgwick of Lenox, Massachussets. He had homes in New York City, Washington, Lenox, and South Carolina, but spent most of his later years in Washington, where he was known in literary circles as a scholar and to his friends as a hospitable but not indiscriminate host.
Charles Astor Bristed died in Washington about a year ago, leaving two sons. Charges Henry MaineBristed. a minor, and John Jacob Astor Bristed. Mr. Bristed was a nephew of John Jacob Astor, and Astor at his death, in 1819, gave him a life estate in the country seat at Hell Gate, and the income
of $150, 000 to descend to his children.
