Orientalist philologist physician
Charles Henry Stanley Davis was born on March 2, 1840 at Goshen, Connecticut, United States. He was the son of Timothy Fisher Davis and Moriva (Hatch) Davis.
Davis was educated in the public school of Meriden, Connecticut, and then by a private tutor. Beginning the study of medicine at the University of Maryland about 1864, he took his medical degree at the University of the City of New York in 1866.
Davis did some post-graduate work at Boston and began the publication of the Boston Medical Register which he conducted for its first year. He pursued further medical study at New York, London, and Paris.
In 1869 he settled in Meriden, Connecticut, where he was to remain for the rest of his life.
In 1870 his History of Wallingford, Connecticut, including Meriden appeared, and in 1873 he was elected to the legislature, serving again in 1885 and 1886. His first effort in philology was in 1878, when he published his Grammar of the Old Persian Language. In the same year he began an Index of Periodical Literature which was maintained for the period 1878-81.
He was active professionally in, and from 1870 until 1917 was clerk of the local medical society.
Among the subjects of his interest was child welfare: in 1879 he published an account of the epidemic of diphtheria which had prevailed in Meriden during 1875-76, while in 1883 appeared his booklet Classification, Education and Training of Feeble-Minded, Imbecile and Idiotic Children.
In 1886 he was appointed physician to the Curtis Iiome for Orphans, which position he retained until 1898; in 1895 he began to serve as physician to the State School for Boys, resigning in 1900.
In addition to the medical publications already mentioned he was the author of The Voice as a Musical Instrument (1879, reprinted 1907); The Self-Cure of Consumption without Medicine (1904), and How To Be Successf ul as a Physician (1905).
His career as an antiquarian appears to have begun in earnest in 1887 when he took over the editorship of Biblia, a journal of Oriental archeology, which in 1906 was merged in the American Antiquarian and Oriental Journal.
He published two volumes on Egypt, the History of Egypt in the Light of Modern Discoveries and The Egyptian Book of the Dead (1894). In 1909 he returned to philology in the publication of his Grammar of the Modern Irish Language. Finally he was the author of two philosophical works, Greek and Roman Stoicism and Some of Life’s Problems (1914), his last literary effort.
