This work indexes books, dissertations and journal articles that mention television shows. Memoirs, autobiographies, biographies, and some popular works meant for fans are also indexed. The major focus is on service to researchers in the history of television. Listings are keyed to an annotated bibliography. Appendices include a list of websites; an index of groups or classes of people on television; and a list of programs by genre. Changes from the second edition include more than 300 new shows, airing on a wider variety of networks; 2000-plus references (more than double the second edition); and a large increase in scholarly articles. The book provides access to materials on almost 2300 shows, including groundbreaking ones like All in the Family (almost 200 entries); cult favorites like Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (200-plus entries); and a classic franchise, Star Trek (more than 400 entries for all the shows). The shows covered range from the late 1940s to 2010 (The Walking Dead). References range from 1956 to 2013.

Charles V. Dintrone was born on May 16, 1942, in New York, United States. He is the son of Vincent Charles Dintrone, a watchmaker and government employee, and Harriet Marie (Leute) Dintrone, a secretary.
Dintrone studied at the University of California in Los Angeles, earning Bachelor of Arts degree from it in 1964, and Master of Arts degree 2 years later. In 1968 he graduated from the University of California in Berkeley as a Master of Library and Information Science.
Dintrone began his career in 1968, getting a job of an assistant government publications librarian at the Fresno State University. In 1972 he moved to the San Diego State University, becoming a head of government publications at the university library, staying there till 1989. During three years from 1989, he worked as a coordinator of library instruction at the same educational institution. Since 1992 Dintrone served as a reference librarian for political science, communication, and European history at the San Diego State University. And from 1999 to 2002 Dintrone held the position of a head of general reference division at the university library. For three years from 2002, he was a head of reference services at the San Diego State University. Dintrone retired in 2005.
As a reference librarian, Dintrone prepares handouts and reference aids. Coupled it with his great interest in reading critical works about television, he has begun to compile a list of references to television programs in books. This subsequently led to Dintrone's published book. He is also a contributor to Government Publications Review.

1996Dintrone is a member of the American Library Association (and the Library Instruction Round Table) and the California Clearing-house on Library Instruction.
Dintrone married Antonia Rowena Fleck, but the couple divorced in September 1980.
On July 24, 1982, he married Patricia Nancy Langer, a college teacher and dean.
