This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. The naturalist September. will find that the birds belonging to most if not all of the smaller rookeries desert them shortly after the young can fly, and often join the members of the larger colonies, never going near them again until the autumn has commenced. Then they visit them day by day, generally arriving each successive morning, almost to the minute, at one particular time. Excerpt from The Birds of Our Rambles: A Companion for the Country The present little volume must be looked upon as an introduction to the study of Field Ornithology, rather than as an exhaustive treatise on the habits of Birds. It has been written with the earnest endeavour to supply what I believe to be a wide-felt want - a handy book about British Birds, so arranged that these creatures may be readily identified in the various haunts they affect. In a subject of this nature the identification of the species is the most important item; and this I have tried to render easy by directing the observer's attention to whatever is most likely to attract his notice, or to be impressed upon his mind - the notes, the general appearance, or peculiarity of habit, being seized upon to introduce the birds to him. Then, having once done that, I have sought still further to stimulate his interest in them by supplying some of the most salient features in the economy of each. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... ages, all living things have been (and still continue to be) unceasingly striving, under the influence of certain well-recognised laws, to adapt themselves to more or less constantly changing conditions of existence. What is popularly known as the "balance of nature" is the primal result of these incessant efforts of organisms, one acting upon the other in countless ways, to maintain a place in the ranks of struggling life. We can very forcibly illustrate these remarks by quoting one or two classical instances recorded by Darwin. Certainly one of the most complex of these is that which illustrates the intricate connection between, and interdependence upon, such widely different organisms as a carnivorous animal and a scented yet lowly flower. Perhaps every reader may be aware that certain flowers absolutely depend upon the visits of insects to fertilise them. They cannot produce seed without such visits; and in a great many instances this fertilisation can only be accomplished by a certain species of insect. Now, one of our commonest flowers, the red clover, is largely, perhaps we might almost say entirely, fertilised by our little friend the humble-bee. If these bees do not visit the clover flowers, those flowers are sterile and produce no seeds. But the humble-bees have a deadly enemy in the field-mice, which destroy, it has been computed, no less than twothirds of their nests and combs. The mice in their turn are destroyed by cats, Owls, Kestrels; so that in localities where the enemies of mice are common the bees have more chance of multiplying, and the flowers a correspondingly greater facility for fertilisation. The abundance of clover in a district may therefore depend upon the number of cats, of Owls and Kestrels! Take another...

(The present volume must be regarded more as a popular int...)
The present volume must be regarded more as a popular introduction to the bird-life of our northern shires than in any way as an exhaustive faunal treatise, although at the same time we believe almost every indigenous species has been included. For twenty years we lived surrounded by these northern birds, so that we may fairly claim to have served our ornithological apprenticeship amongst them. With the birds of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire we are specially familiar; whilst repeated visits not only to the Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, and Northumbrian littoral, but farther afield into Lancashire, and various parts of the Lowlands and the Highlands of Scotland, have enabled us to acquire much personal information relating to the avifauna of many a northern shire. The difference between the avifaunæ of the northern and southern shires is strongly marked in many respects. Their study makes a record of avine comparisons of the most intense interest. The important effects produced by latitude and climate upon the bird-life of these widely separated areas make material for fascinating investigation, and have been fully dwelt upon as opportunities were presented. This variation in avine phenomena is not only far too often entirely ignored, but is apt to lead the student of bird-lore astray; due allowance has to be made in many cases for this difference in latitude, and all that it involves. The present volume, then, to a great extent a study of ornithological comparisons, will, we trust, be of some service to the bird lover or the bird student in his task of making allowances. Unquestionably these northern shires from an ornithological point of view are much more interesting than the southern, and especially the south-western counties. Their avifauna is richer, and presents far greater variety, notably during the breeding season; whilst the marvellous phenomenon of Migration there unfolds itself each season in a manner that is never remarked elsewhere. DIXON, Charles was born on July 20, 1858 in London. Son of late Charles Thomas Dixon, landscape painter and engraver.
Studied at various public schools. Boyhood passed near Sheffield. London, 1880-1891; Devonshire, 1891-1900.
Has devoted his whole life to the study of Natural History. In pursuing this study he has visited most parts of the British Islands from the English Channel to St. Kilda, -where he discovered the wren peculiar to that locality. He has also travelled in North Africa, where a new species and many rarities were obtained by him. For five years he was associated with the late Henry Seebohm, writing in collaboration with him a work on British Birds.
Of late years he has made the migration of birds and the geographical distribution of species his special study, promulgating several new theories, and suggesting an entirely new law, bearing upon these questions. Naturalist, author, journalist, and lecturer.
