Charles Hermans studied under the guidance of such painters as François-Joseph Navez and Louis Gallait. Then he passed through the Saint Luc workshop in Brussels. It offered an alternative non-traditional education. Between 1858 and 1861 Hermans studied with the painter Charles Gleyre at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, an official art school in Paris.
Hermans resided in Italy from 1862 to 1867. There he became fascinated by the monastic life of Rome, and monks became a favorite subject of many of his paintings between 1866 and 1869. Later Charles Hermans made a number of other trips, visiting the Mediterranean area and Spain.
His canvas At Dawn became a real sensation at the Brussels Salon of 1875. There he earned his reputation of a prominent Belgian artist. It was the first manifesto realized in a format previously uncommon in the history of painting.
He participated in major international exhibitions, including the art section of the World Fair held in Paris in 1878. His paintings were purchased by numerous museums, both in Belgium and abroad.
