Since 1913, an employee of the Moscow newspaper, since 1915, a professional actor, author and performer of satirical monologues. Smirnov-Sokolsky devoted more than 25 years to work on the manuscript of the book "My Library". In the spring of 1924, Nikolai Pavlovich performed (with the participation of Roman Zorina, a singer of romances) at the Voronezh cinema "Proletary", performed the popular feuilleur "World Flood" and a number of monologues and songs.
Compiled a unique library of rare and valuable editions of the XVIII-XX centuries. The author of several books, including "Stories about books" (Moscow, 1959; repeatedly reprinted), "Stories about the lifetime editions of Pushkin" (Moscow, 1962).
