Igwe was born on August 23, 1958 in Awka, Anambra, Nigeria; the son of Wilfred and Agnes Igwe.

Igwe was born on August 23, 1958 in Awka, Anambra, Nigeria; the son of Wilfred and Agnes Igwe.
Igwe received a bachelor's degree in Agriculture and Soil Science at the University of Nigeria in 1984. Four years later he earned his Master of Science degree in Soil Science from the University of Nigeria. In 1994, Charles was given a Ph.D. in Soil Conservation from the University of Nigeria.
Igwe began his career as a soil survey assistant at the University of Nigeria in 1976. Fifteen years later, he became a lecturer at the same university. Then in 1997, Charles became a senior lecturer at the University of Nigeria. Since 2003, Charles has been a professor of soil science at the University of Nigeria. Also, he was Head of the department, associate dean of faculty, dean of faculty and directors of centres at various times at that university.
In 2016, Igwe was appointed deputy vice-chancellor of Administration of the University of Nigeria and was reappointed in 2018. Since 2019 he has been working as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria. Charles was a visiting researcher and professor in Universities located in Germany, Japan, Norway, Italy and France.
Igwe is a member of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Japanese Society for Promotion of Science and Soil Science Society of Nigeria.
On February 3, 1966 Charles Igwe married Justina Ngozi Ibekwe. They have four children.
