Charles Major was born on July 25, 1856, in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. He was a son of Stephen and Phoebe (Gatskill) Major.
Charles Major attended the University of Michigan from 1872 to 1875. After that, he returned to Indiana to work in his father’s law firm while studying for the bar.
Charles Major was admitted to the Indiana bar association in 1877 and opened his own law practice. In 1898 he published his first book, When Knighthood Was in Flower, under the pseudonym Edwin Caskoden. The novel was adapted into a popular Broadway play by Paul Kester in 1901. After that, Major ended his career as a lawyer and devoted his time to writing. His next book, The Bears of Blue River, was published in 1901 and the third novel was published in 1903. He continued to write and publish several additional novels and a number of children's adventure stories.
