Educated at St. Paul’s School, Concord, N. H. he graduated B. A. at Yale University in 1882, and M.A. four years later, while his architectural training was acquired at Columbia University, 1889-92, and during four subsequent years in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Shortly after the turn of the century Mr. Mathews opened an office in New York and in the following years established a reputation as a specialist in ecclesiastical design. He participated in a number of church competitions, while among his executed work was the east end of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, 1901, and the beautiful Gothic Lady's Chapel. Retiring from practice about 1920, Mr. Mathews turned his attention to literary pursuits, and in the following years published a number of books on Art and kindred subjects.
