Chares Negre was born on May 9, 1820, in Grassendorf, Alsace, France.
Charles Negre studied under the painters' Paul Delaroche, Ingres and Drolling before establishing his own studio at 21 Quai Bourbon on the Île Saint-Louis, Paris.
Charles Negre operated a portrait studio in Paris. A side from his studio work, he was noted for being one of the earliest street photographers. Particularly prized are his images of the various tradespeople of Paris. Charles Negre spent his last years catering to the tourist trade on the Riviera in Nice.
Charles Nègre undertook to transfer gelatine chromate images to zinc plates. He also explored the process of doing heliogravure on steel about 1853. Charles Nègre was the first to experimentally produce halftone pictures in zincography. And, in 1867, he invented a process by which a steel plate was gold-plated in a galvanic bath. Charles Nègre also built a special lens with a wide opening and a sophisticated diaphragm that enabled him to make exposures in a matter of seconds.
