This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Charles Seymour Robinson was an American clergyman, compiler of hymns and editor born on March 31, 1829
Background
Charles Seymour Robinson was born in Bennington, Vermont, United States on March 31, 1829. He was the son of Henry and Martha Prime (Haynes) Robinson. The family was related to John Robinson, pastor of the Pilgrims in Leyden, and included honored founders of Bennington and the state.
Education
Charles prepared for college at Union Academy, East Bennington, and graduated at Williams in 1849.
After teaching for two years he spent a year at Union Seminary, New York, and graduated in 1855 at Princeton Seminary.
Career
He was ordained April 19, 1855, as pastor of the Park Presbyterian Church, Troy, New York Freshness of thought and personal charm gave marked attractiveness to his ministry.
In 1860 he was called to the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, New York. From boyhood Robinson had been passionately fond of music; he played the flute and would walk miles to hear a good band; as pastor he was deeply interested in promoting a higher type of congregational singing. To this end, during his pastorate in Brooklyn he entered upon the studies in hymnology which were his absorbing avocation for thirty years and greatly extended his influence and usefulness. His first venture in the preparation of hymnals was Hymns of the Church, published in 1862. This was followed in 1865 by Songs for the Sanctuary, which met with wide acceptance especially in Presbyterian and Congregational churches; over half a million copies of it were issued. In 1868 he resigned his charge at Brooklyn and became pastor of the American Chapel in Paris, which under his leadership united the work of several Christian bodies and became the "American Church in Paris. " Obliged to leave that city when it was besieged by the German army in 1870, he returned to New York and was called to the pastorate of the Eleventh (later Madison Avenue) Presbyterian Church, where he gave devoted service for seventeen years. In 1875 he published Psalms and Hymns, which became the official hymnal of the Southern Presbyterian Church, and in 1878, Selection of Spiritual Songs, which showed the influence of the modern English hymn and tune writers. This influence was much more marked in Laudes Domini (1884), characterized in Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology (London, 1915) as "a book of great excellence, " which came into extensive use; New Laudes Domini appeared in 1892. Regarding all this work in hymnology as his special contribution to the life of the churches, Robinson would not use his large royalties from his hymnals for himself or his family, but devoted them to the building fund of his church and other benefactions. The breaking of his health under continuous overstrain led him to resign his pastorate, and he turned to literary work, still doing much preaching. He had edited the Illustrated Christian Weekly in 1876-77; he now conducted Every Thursday, a periodical of his own (March 1890 - April 1891). Besides the hymnals already mentioned he had edited some fifteen minor collections and had written several volumes mainly of an expository character. He now published Sabbath Evening Sermons (1887), The Pharaohs of the Bondage and the Exodus (1887), Simon Peter, His Early Life and Times (1889), Simon Peter, His Later Life and Labours (1894), and Annotations upon Popular Hymns (1893). Notwithstanding his rapidly failing strength, he undertook a brief pastorate (1891) with the Thirteenth Street Presbyterian Church, and another (1892 - 98) with the New York Presbyterian Church on 128th Street.
