Charles Villa-Vicencio was born on November 7, 1942 in Johannesburg, United States; the son of Charles and Paula Villa-Vicencio.
Villa-Vicencio began his career as a part-time lecturer at the University of Cape Town in 1976. Two years later he took a position of a senior lecturer at the University of South Africa. In 1981, Charles became an associate professor at that university.
He served as a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town from 1982 to 1984. Then in 1984, Villa-Vicencio was appointed an associate professor at the same university. From 1988 he was Head of the Department of Religious Studies and professor at the University of Cape Town. Nowadays Charles is Professor Emeritus of religious studies at that university.
Villa-Vicencio is also a senior research fellow in the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town and served as its executive director for eight years. Villa-Vicencio teaches and undertakes research at Georgetown University. He advised numerous countries dealing with the challenges of rebuilding their societies after periods of internal strife, including Peru and various African nations.
Villa-Vicencio is known for his books, including "Walk with Us and Listen: Political Reconciliation in Africa", "The Spirit of Freedom: South African Leaders on Religion and Politics", "A Theology of Reconstruction" and others.
As a director of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he was instrumental in organizing of the public hearings on the atrocities committed during apartheid.
