Chetty was born on August 7, 1957 in Durban, Natal, South Africa; the son of Perumal and Leela Chetty.
Chetty received a Bachelor of Medicine degree from Royal College of Surgeons in 1982. Thirteen years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University.
Chetty began his career as an intern at King Edward Hospital in 1982. A year later he took a position of a resident of the Department of Pathology at the University of Natal. Then in 1998, Runjan was appointed a consultant of the Anatomical Pathology Department at the University of Cape Town.
In 1992, he became an anatomic pathologist at Royal Melbourne Hospital and held it for a year. Also Chetty worked as a professor and head of Anatomical Pathology Department and chair of Pathology Department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 1995 to 2002. In 2002, he held the position of a staff pathologist at The Princess Margaret Hospital.
In 2010, Runjan was appointed a professor and head of Pathology Department at the University of Glasgow. A year later he became a director of Translation Pathology Department at NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research, where he worked until 2013. The same years Chetty served as a professor at the Nuffield Division of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Oxford.
Since 2013 he has been a pathologist and medical director of Laboratory Medicine Program at UHN (University Health Network) Toronto General Hospital.

2016Chetty is a member of the Royal College of Pathologists in Australia, the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom and International Academy of Pathologists.
On January 28, 1984 Runjan Chetty married Kamsella Devi Naidoo. They have 2 children.
