Charles M. Wynn was born on May 8, 1939, in New York City, New York, United States.
Wynn was educated at the Bronx High School of Science. He then graduated from the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree in 1960 and received his master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1963. Two years later, Wynn earned his doctorate at the same university.
Wynn started his career by serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer at the Malayan Teachers College in Malaysia where he was Consultant in Chemistry to the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Education in Mathematics and Science till 1968. He was appointed Visiting Scholar in Science and Society at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and then worked as a professor of physical science at Oakland Community College in Farmington from 1969 to 1979.
Since 1979, Wynn has been working at Eastern Connecticut State University, where he currently holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Chemistry.
During his long career, Wynn was honoured for his teaching and scholarship as the E.I. du Pont Outstanding Teaching Fellow at the University of Michigan, Outstanding Educator of America at Oakland Community College in Michigan, and Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year at Eastern Connecticut State University. His critically acclaimed science trilogy (co-authored with Arthur W. Wiggins), The Five Biggest Ideas in Science, The Five Biggest Unsolved Problems in Science, and Quantum Leaps in the Wrong Direction: Where Real Science Ends and Pseudoscience Begins, has been translated into eleven languages. He has lectured about these subjects in Malaysia, China, Canada, Australia, England, Puerto Rico and Russia. His latest book (co-edited with Arthur W. Wiggins) is And God said, "Let there be Evolution!": Reconciling the Book of Genesis, the Qur'an and the Theory of Evolution.

Wynn is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of University Professors, American Chemical Society, American Educational Sciences Association, New England Association of Chemistry Teachers, Connecticut Science Teachers Association, Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Tau Beta Pi.
Wynn is married and has one son, Charles M. Wynn, Jr., a research physicist at MIT's Lincoln Lab in Lexington.
