Charles Barton Reynolds was born on January 8, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States.
Charles Reynolds studied at the Institute of Design, Chicago (now IIT Institute of Design (ID)) (1952-1956), and at Columbia College, Chicago (1979).
Since 1978 Charles Reynolds has been a member of the adjunct faculty of Columbia College, and since 1975 he has been a consultant to Chicago Albumen Works. He has also owned Charles Reynolds Photography since 1959. He has played principal bassoon for the Northwest Indiana Symphony since 1974.
Charles Reynolds has reactivated the use of the Kallitype printing process and made copy negatives of a Muybridge portfolio to print on albumen paper. He also made the first modern albumen prints from Eugène Atget negatives, in association with Chicago Albumen Works and the Museum of Modern Art.
