(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from A General History of the Burr Family: With a...)
Excerpt from A General History of the Burr Family: With a Genealogical Record From 1193 to 1902 There are people in our time who treat the inquiries of the genealogist with indifference, and even with contempt. His researches seem to them a waste of time and energy. Interest in ancestors, love of family and kindred, those subtle questions of race, origin, even of life itself, which they involve, are quite beyond their comprehension. They live only in the present, care nothing for the past and little for the future; for "he who cares not whence he cometh, cares not whither he goeth." When such persons are approached with questions of ancestry, they retire to their stronghold of apathy; and the querist learns, without difficulty, that whether their ancestors were vile or illustrious, virtuous or vicious, or whether, indeed, they ever had any, is to them a matter of supreme indifference. Now we think it can be shown that this state of feeling is an abnormal one, a perversion of the natural and kindly impulses of the heart, which lead us to regard our progenitors with respect and affection. Sometimes it is assumed; often it is caused by that lofty independence of character which disdains to admit that its eminence has been attained through the wealth or patronage of ancestors; but more generally it arises from the disgust and aversion caused by that foolish pride of lineage which refuses recognition to a man unless he can unfold a long and famous pedigree, and which claims honor and consideration from the mere accident of birth, without regard to character or attainments. This pride of lineage is, undoubtedly, one of the weakest and most foolish foibles of humanity; yet there is above and beyond it a veneration and love for ancestry that is commendable. Indeed, this forms one of the most pleasing traits of the race, and has obtained among all peoples and in all ages. The prospectus was circulated through the country, and met with so favorable a response that, in 1806, Barlow drew up a bill for the incorporation of the Institution, which Mr. Logan, of Pennsylvania, introduced in the Senate. It passed to a second reading, was referred to a committee, which never reported, and so was lost. The opposition of the schools and colleges already established, and the indifference of the great majority of Congressmen to anything but the material development of the country, were sufficient to defeat it. Although the poet had settled on Washington as his future place of residence, nearly two years elapsed before he became a householder there, the intervening time being spent in travel, in visiting friends, and in attendance upon his printers in Philadelphia--for the " Columbiad " had been given to a reputable firm of printers of that city during the first year of the poet's return. His movements during this period are satisfactorily explained by a few letters culled from the mass of his correspondence. The most interesting is one from Fulton, who had been left behind in England, to urge on its Government the importance of his torpedo invention. In September, 1806, he was able to write from London: "My arbitration is finished, and I have been allowed the £10,000 which I had received, with 5000^ salary, total ...

(Excerpt from The True Aaron Burr: A Biographical Sketch ...)
Excerpt from The True Aaron Burr: A Biographical Sketch In later life Colonel Aaron Burr took into his law office several young men of brilliant parts whom he educated for the bar, and some of whom he adopted. To these young men who had his confidence he was fond of talking of the men and events of his career. Some of these men the writer was privileged to know, and to him as a collateral descendant of Colonel Burr and the historian of his family, they repeated his reminiscences and talked more freely of his plans and purposes as revealed by him than they would have done to a stranger, so that this little book, in so far as it relates to certain phases of Colonel Burr's career in controversy, may be said to have been inspired by that gentleman himself and to express his views in the historical controversy between himself and the American people - or rather between him and certain mendacious writers of history who, for the past fifty years, have left no depth of falsehood or slander unsounded in their effort to prove Aaron Burr a traitor and a murderer. The historic fact that after a trial lasting months, with the President of the United States personally directing it, and urging on his dogs of war, a prejudiced jury was compelled to declare the accused innocent of treason would have cleared most men - but it did not Aaron Burr; and why not? Because there were men, many men, interested in having him declared a traitor. Colonel Burr trusted to the twentieth century to vindicate him, and certain signs of the times indicate that his trust was not in vain.

He was born at Redding, Connecticut, educated at the common schools, and fitted for college, but failure of eyesight prevented him from entering.
Public schools and by private tutors. Was teacher for several years. Unmarried.
After teaching for some time, he devoted himself to literary pursuits, and contributed to American magazines. In May 1877, Charles Burr Todd was appointed commissioner for erecting a monument on the 1778-1779 winter quarters of General Israel Putnam"s division of Continentals in Redding, Connecticut, which was authorized by act of the Connecticut legislature.
He was instrumental in the creation of Putnam Memorial State Park.
As a Redding resident and historian he was interested in preserving the site, which is now a state park dedicated to Putnam"s encampment. In 1895 he was secretary of the committee appointed by Mayor Strong for the printing of early records of New York City.
In 1903 Todd entered a Washington, District of Columbia police station, claiming that he had been poisoned and that detectives from New York City were pursuing him with the intent of killing him for magazine articles he had written a decade earlier and that offended certain prominent New Yorkers. He appeared otherwise sane but was nonetheless confined to an insane asylum for eight days, whereupon he was released.
