He graduated from Columbia in 1879, spent a year at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and studied in Halle, Germany, and Strasbourg, Germany (now in France). In 1884, he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Strasbourg University.
Ordained Lutheran ministry, 1885. Pastor Saint John's, Jersey City, New Jersey, 1885-1890, Saint Peter’s, New York, 1890-1896, Saint Paul’s, Mount Vernon, New York, 1897-1900. Specialist in Egyptology and pupil of the European savant Dümichen.
