Published an influential pamphlet opposing criminal code prepared by Edward Livingston, 1826. Admitted to Philadelphia bar, 1829. Published Essai historique sur la Louisiane, 1830.
Elected to Louisiana Legislature, 1830. Appointed assistant attorney general Louisiana, 1831. Presiding judge city cts. of New Orleans, 1832.
Elected to the United States Senate, 1835, resigned because of ill health. Went to France; stayed until 1843, while there started Histoire de la Luisiane, published 1846-1847. Member Louisiana Legislature, 1844-1846.
Secretary of state Louisiana, 1846-1853, established 1st state library, defeated for reelection (perhaps by use of fraudulent opposition voting), 1853. Because of this experience wrote School for politics (a satirical novel). Participated in formation of Know-Nothing Party in Louisiana.
Supported Confederacy during Civil War, but realizing its hopeless position he advocated freeing and arming of slaves. President Louisiana History Society, 1860-1888. Reporter of decisions Louisiana Supreme Court, 1873-1876.
