Not illustrated. 1899 Excerpt: ... There is one of these Captaines, Captaine Hilliard,2 whoe is a very honest, religious, and active man, whome I humbly present to your Highnesse, that in case that troope bee disbanded you wilbe pleased to thinke upon him for a troope of Horse, and I am confident hee will proove a very good officer. I finde him very faithfull, stirring, and very discreet in managing of his businesse. There being 3 or 4 Clans in Highland not yet wholly reduc't I humbly ofFerre it as my opinion that these forces are not to bee lessend, both in regard the reducing this Enimy will require some tyme, and that untill these broken people bee disposed of by sending some regiments beyond seas to serve some Forraigne Princes or States, such a dimunicion wilbe dangerous; although I have taken the best care I can of taking securitye of the officers, which I hope will hold them fast, but wee could not get security of the common men, only an engagement under their hands not to act for the future against your Highnesse, yet their necessityes will probably bee such in a short tyme, that unlesse there bee a course taken to send them some other way, they will either turne robbers or to runne amongst any discontented spiritts which are not yet laid. I have the rather hastened to present thus much to your Highnesse at this tyme, in regard I understand your Highnesse and the Parliament have now under consideracion what forces are fitt to bee kept up in England or Ireland. I intreat your Highnesse that 25000t which I heare is intended by sea may bee hastened away speedily unto us, and for what further supplies shalbee sent us there may bee libertye to charge bills of Exchange. The Treasurer here tells mee that if there were a constant way of returnes hee could charge a good parte of the pay of t...

(These volumes are intended to be a continuation of the Hi...)
These volumes are intended to be a continuation of the History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate which Dr. S. E. Gardiner left unfinished. The third volume of his book was pub Ushed in 1901, just before he fell ill. The only portion of the projected fourth volume which he left in a sufficiently advanced state for pubhcation was the chapter on the Parhamentary Elections of 1656, pubhshed separately in 1903. I cannot refrain from expressing once more the regret felt by all students of Enghsh history that Dr. Gardiner was not spared to complete the book to which he devoted so many years, and to give the world his final estimate of the aims and achievements of the Protector. A continuation by another hand has necessarily many defects. Though this was undertaken in accordance with Dr. Gardiner swishes, I am conscious that I do not possess either the comprehensive knowledge or the perfect equipment which he brought to his task. An explanation of this kind seemed necessary in order to show why these volumes begin, somewhat abruptly, with the meeting of Cromwel Fssecond Parhament in September, 1656, and to account for the absence of any preliminary sketch of the position of Enghsh pohtics at that moment. The History of the Commonwealth and Protectorate supphes the place of any such introduction, and a certain acquaintance with it is throughout assumed. (For nearly 200 year after his death so little was known o...)
For nearly 200 year after his death so little was known of Oliver Cromwell's personal views and motives that he was generally regarded as, in Hume's words, "a hypocritical fanatic." Carlyle's researches were sufficient to refute the charge of hypocrisy, but not until the beginning of the 20th century was a sufficient mass of documents and personal correspondence assembled to make possible a just and balanced account of Cromwell's life. Sir Charles Firth's biography, first published in 1900, presents such an account, and in the years that have passed since the book was written, it has become generally recognized as a standard work, soundly informative as history and worthy of preservation as literature.
