Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, 1863.

Career

Promoted ensign, October 1, 1863. Advanced through grades to rear admiral, September 11, 1903. On board Wachusett, Brazilian Squadron, 1863-1864.

Participated in capture of Confederate cruiser Florida in harbor of Bahia, Brazil, October 7, 1864. Commanded Raleigh. January-March 1897, Amphitrite, 1897-1898. Commandant Naval War College, 1900.

Retired September 8, 1905. Home: Brookline, Mass.
