Convis was born on April 21, 1926 in Lansford, North Dakota, United States; the son of Lester Campbell Convis and Ada Margaret (McHaney) Convis.
Convis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas in 1951. Five years later he earned his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. In 1980, Charles was given a Ph.D. from the University of Texas.
Convis began his career as a lawyer at Standard Oil Corporation of California in 1957. Three years later he took a position of a deputy district attorney at Marin County. Then in 1964, Charles became a partner Convis, Kennedy & Shaw. Also he served as a professor at Southwest Texas State University (nowadays Texas State University) from 1976 to 1982. In 1982, Convis was appointed a law professor at Duquesne University. Three years later he became a deputy district attorney at San Joaquin County. Since 1995 Charles has been an owner and chief executive officer at Pioneer Press.
Charles is the biographer of Myles Keogh of Indian Wars fame, and has been published in many western magazines and journals. He writes and gives talks on Nevada history.

On July 30, 1949 Charles Convis married Mary Anne Crawley. They have five children.
