Clare Hodgson Meeker graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Boston University in 1975. She received a Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University in 1980.
Clare Hodgson Meeker was the first Planned Giving Director of KCTS/9 between 1981 and 1986, and was part of KCTS/9's first capital campaign which successfully raised money for their new building at Seattle Center.
She was also an executive director of Washington Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in Seattle from 1986 to 1988. Between 1990 and 1994 she was a grant writing consultant at Seattle University in Seattle.
Clare Meeker left the practice of law to raise two children and began writing books in 1993. Her books and magazine stories explore the lives of endangered animals, including elephants ("Hansa"), sea otters ("Lootas"), Siberian tigers, African rhinos, and Hawaiian monk seals ("Rhino rescue!") and the amazing animal care specialists who’ve helped these animals survive. She has chronicled the lives of women who have helped change the world including First Lady and early suffragette Abigail Adams ("Partner in revolution") and pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson ("I could not keep silent").
Meeker has taught writing workshops in elementary and middle schools throughout the Northwest and to adults at Richard Hugo House, a non-profit community writing center in Seattle, Washington. She is a frequent guest speaker, most recently at a Business of Writing class at Pacific Lutheran University in 2019 and at the 2018 Southwest Washington Writers Conference in Vancouver, Washington.
Clare Hodgson Meeker is best known as an award-winning author of true animal stories, biographies, folktales, picture books, and chapter books for elementary school-age children. She won the First place award from the Pacific Northwest Writer’s Contest in 1993 for "Who Wakes Rooster?".
Meeker's book "Lootas" was chosen the 1999 Notable Book for Children by Smithsonian Magazine. Besides, her book "Rhino Rescue!" was named Junior Library Guild Book of the Day on March 28, 2016.
