In this book Professor Dunn tells of the experiences of the many Gaelic-speaking people of the Highlands and Western Islands who emigrated from Scotland to North America between the end of the eighteenth and the middle of the nineteenth centuries, and their descendants in Nova Scotia He has consulted with care and thoroughness many sources. He has read local histories and sought out scarce Gaelic song-books, pamphlets, and periodicals. He has also observed personally the folkways of the descendants of the Highland settlers and recorded the results of his meeting with professors, teachers, doctors, priests, ministers, farmers, fishermen, and housewives sympathetically and vividly. He has tried to answer the question, What does emigration do to a folk-culture? And he has tried to do so, as far as possible, in the words of his informants. In the course of the book he has provided many examples of writing in Gaelic, with English translations, so that the reader may discover at first hand how closely life and language are related for the Highland settler.
