Hu Chen-fu studied biology at Soochow University, from which he received his Bachelor of Science (1917) and Master of Science (1919) degrees.
After teaching one year at St. John's University in Shanghai, China from 1919 till 1920, he went to America on Tsing Hua Fellowship and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cornell University.
Hu Chen-fu occupied different positions such as professor of Entomology at National Southeastern University and Entomologist in the Bureau of Entomology of Kiangsu Province in 1922, professor of Biology and Head of Biology Department at Soochow University in 1923-1926, Director of the Biological Supply Service at Soochow University in 1925-1926, professor of Zoology, Yenching University since 1926 and Chairman of the Biology Department in 1927-1931, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences at Yenching University in 1929.
He was also a travelling Professorship of the Rockefeller Foundation and Visiting Professor of Entomology at Cornell University in 1933-1934, member of Sigma Xi (Cornell 1922), Phi Tau Phi (Soochow 1924), and Beta Beta Beta (Yenching 1928), Honorary Professor of Fan Memorial Institute of Biology at Peiping, Vice-President of Peking Society of Natural History in 1934-1935, Editor-in-chief of Peking Natural History Bulletin since 1931 and Vice-President and Editor of the Zoological Society of China in 1934-1935.
