Cherríe Moraga was born on September 25, 1952, in Los Angeles County, California. She grew up with two siblings as a child of a white man and a Hispanic woman. Her father left while she was still young and Cherríe was raised primarily by her mother, who she respected for her struggle and strength. Moraga grew up in southern California and because of her mother’s determination and insistence grew to appreciate the importance of an education. Moraga has cited her mother as her main inspiration to become a writer, stating that she was an eminent storyteller.
