Higgins' odyssey of discovery has spanned three decades and led him across boundaries of geography, nationality, and culture. Chester Archer Higgins, Jr. was born on November 6, 1946 in Lexington, Kentucky, United States. He grew up in New Brockton, Alabama.
Chester Higgins, Jr. attended Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), where he was mentored by the school's official photographer, P.H. Polk, and graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in business management.
Since 1975 Chester Higgins, Jr. has been on staff at The New York Times. In 1974 he received an NEA grant and a United Nations Medal, and the New York Metropolitan Printers Award. He was the recipient of Ford Foundation fellowships in 1974, 1973 and 1972.
Using an unobtrusive style, Chester Higgins, Jr. attempts to document "the behavior of people and things."
