Chiaho Shih

Background

Shih, Chiaho was born on January 9, 1950 in Tainan, Taiwan. Son of Hai-Tsan and King-Hwa (Yuan) Shih. came to the United States, 1975.

Education

Bachelor of Science, National Taiwan U., Taipei, 1973; Doctor of Philosophy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1982.

Career

His research is in the area of Molecular virology, Viral hepatitis and Hepatoma, and Cancer. He is best known for his discovery of the first human oncogene Ras in 1982 while as a graduate student in the lab of Robert Weinberg at MIT, which is partially documented in Natalie Angier's book Natural Obsessions, about her year spent in Weinberg's lab. Shih was previously a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Pennsylvania.

Achievements

• Achievements include discovery and isolation of the first human cancer gene ras and discovery of cancer gene neu, first defective interfering-like virus in human natural infection.

President Houston chapter North America Taiwanese Professor Association, 1994-1995. Member American Society Virology, American Society Microbiology, Society Chinese Bio-scientists in American (president Houston chapter 1996-1997).
