Chih-yuan Sung occupied such positions as Commander of 26th Mixed Brigade, Commander of the 11th Division, Military Governor of Jehol, Field Commander of the Fourth Route Army of the Second Group Army, member of the Military Council, Chairman of Shensi Provincial Government in 1927, Commander of the 23th Division, Chairman of Chahar Provincial Government and concurrently Commander of the 29th Army in 1931-1935. Then he was forced to resign his chairmanship of Chahar by the Japanese in summer of 1935 and became Garrison Commander of Peiping, Tientsin Area, China, retaining command of the 29th Army in 1935. Mr. Sun was one of the ablest and most successful lieutenants of Feng Yu-hsiang.
During the Japanese invasion of Jehol in the spring of 1933, he commanded the 29th Army and put tip a valiant defense at the Hsifengkuo Pass which he held for over a month against tremendous odds. Owing to the collapse of Chinese defenses at other points of the Great Wall, he was forced to abandon Hsifengkou in the middle of April of 1933. Then he became Chairman of the Hopei-Chahar Political Council, Chairman of the Hopei Provincial Government and Pacification Commissioner of Hopei and Chahar.
