Scholar-priest at the Gangoji Temple in Nara, he was known as the most endowed disciple of Chizo. Studied the Sanron Sect doctrine and was also attracted by the Jodo Sect. He called his cottage in the Gangoji Temple compound Gokurakuin or Heavenly Hall. In his cottage he kept a Mandala depicting a scene of Gokuraku or Heaven. Called Chiko Mandala, this became one of the three greatest Mandalas in Japan, the other two being Taima and Shokai Mandalas.
