Chiyozo Okajima was born in Osaka.
Chiyozo Okajima was at first a rice merchant. When' he learned that muslin imported from France for kimono amounted to $1,000,000 a year, he resolved to manufacture this textile in Japan. Buildmg a small mill in Osaka (1877), he started manufacturing patterned muslin on an experimental basis. He gradually developed various types of muslin.
